43 43 But he [Mose] consciously chose the tense for the promise not with reference to the present, but to the future. He does not say, ‘Which land I will show you,’ but “Which I will show you” (Gen 12:1) – as proof of the faith that the soul [of Abraham] had in God. It shows gratitude not merely for the fulfillment, but for the expectation of what is to come. 44 For the soul that prepares itself and is eager for good hope, that assumes without doubt that what has not yet happened will immediately happen, and that because of unshakable faith in the one who promised it, that soul has attained the perfect good, the prize of victory. Hence it is said again, “Abraham believed God” (Gen 15:6). And in the same way he [God] said to Moses, after showing him the whole land: “I have shown it to your eyes, but you will not go there” (Dtn 34:4).
