1 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, saying, Say to this people: How long will ye sin, adding sin upon sin, lawlessness upon lawlessness? Doth not mine eye see the things ye do, saith the Lord; doth not mine ear hear the things ye speak one with another, saith God the Almighty, when ye say: We fasted (but) God did not hear us, and we prayed (but) he did not pay heed to us. Have ye fasted to me, saith the Lord Almighty; do ye stretch out your hands towards me, saith God. Rather ye have fasted to Baal and ye have grieved me, saying: Where is the God of Abraham, or who is the God of Israel? But Baal and Astarte are your gods whom ye serve, who have guided you.
